Chianti Classico Magazine: Region and Trenitalia promise more trains and more frequent service

Is it possible to reach Chianti communities by train? The response to that question conceals many a quandary. A quick survey of the Chianti communities shows that three stations are served and they are all on the Empoli-Siena-Chiusi rail line. The stations are at Barberino Val d'Elsa, Castellina in Chianti (at Castellina Scalo, which also serves Monteriggioni) and Castelnuovo Berardenga (at Castelnuovo Scalo). What is more, the small, semi-abandoned stations (only Castellina has a restoration project under way) are about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the centers of the towns they serve. And connecting bus service is practically inexistent, in some cases, limited to a single stop a day.
